Levels of Resistance

When preparing for change, do you take into considerations the various levels of resistance employees may have or show? Do you take the time to truly understand their support, like or dislike? Their needs and wishes, fears and worries? Do you feel equipped to address these resistances in order to build knowledge, support and trust?

Here is some food for thought:

  • Resistance is often seen as resistance through the eyes of the “other” – the beholder or witness.
  • But: People resist in response to something specific.
  • Resistance can also work as a protection mechanism – as a shield versus the unknown or the reluctance.
  • The more we know about the why of the resistance, the easier it is to address it properly.
